Wooden Chess Sets
Wood is the most common material used for production of chess sets and chessboards. One might say wooden chess sets are the classical approach: they are used in all top-level tournaments. It is hard to imagine a World Championship match played with anything else.
Wooden pieces come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Apart from the standard design, there are pieces that replicate sets used a long time ago, and also some unusual, modern designs. For beginner, the standard design would be the best idea.

Size of the pieces is usually described by "king height" and "king base diameter". The king is usually the largest piece in a set. Meaning of height is obvious. The base diameter is important if you already have a chessboard or if you buy chessboard and pieces separately. Make sure that the pieces fit the board.
Prices of wooden chess sets wary. A good quality set can be bought for as little as 50$. Depending on size and types of wood used prices go up to 1000$ and even more for some special luxury sets.
