Plastic sets are aimed mainly for chess clubs or tournament organizers, who need many chess sets and are on a budget. There is a chance to get a significant discount on bulk purchases. Also it might be a good idea to get one for small children, who might be likely to throw pieces around and damage them. It would be a waste to have an expensive set damaged like this, while a cheap plastic one would be perfect for the task.
